In recognition of World Autism Day, the Aquatarium launches AQSI

The AQ is a SENSORY-FRIENDLY Welcoming Facility

Brockville – The Aquatarium at Tall Ships Landing will be among the first facility of its kind to offer sensory inclusive considerations all day, every day, and goes live on World Autism Day, April 2nd, 2020.

The Aquatarium prides itself in inspiring curiosity through enriching and entertaining experiences in the 1000 Islands region of the St Lawrence River. It is our goal to provide the best experience to all our guests that visit. Therefore, the Aquatarium is thrilled announce the launch of AQSI – AQ Sensory Inclusion to provide a supportive and welcoming environment for children living with autism and their families.

To help make the visitors experience as enjoyable and engaging as possible, staff and volunteers of the Aquatarium, through a partnership with Ausome Ottawa, have participated in Autism Awareness training.  This training has a proven track record of providing staff and volunteers with the proper tools and communication methods that will assist in meeting the needs of individuals living with autism and those around them.

On-site supports, such as sensory kits that include noise-cancelling headphones, fidget toys, call-ahead accommodations, and a designated quiet space are available throughout the Aquatarium – all within our welcoming, nonjudgmental environment.  In addition,  supports such as a social story, visual schedule and visual/sensory maps have been developed in order to facilitate your visit and are available on the website:

The Aquatarium at Tall Ships Landing will be one of the first facility of its kind that will provide resources and supports designed with sensory inclusion in mind, not reserved for limited times, but during every hour of operation.

The Aquatarium is proud to work with Ausome Ottawa and acknowledges the support and sponsorship of Thousand Island Concrete in order to bring this amazing initiative to the city of Brockville and the 1000 Islands region.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the AQ once it is safe to do so.
